France, Poitou Charentes - Les Trois Canons
Les Trois Canons is a collection of just a few houses on the west coast of France facing out into the Bay of Biscay. Les Trois Canons is described as a hamlet in the commune of Yves.
Just inland at Les Trois Canons are several mussel farms which pump large amounts of fresh sea water into and out of the artificial mussel beds. The days of going out at low tide to harvest mussels has long gone at Les Trois Canons. Sadly there appears to be a complete disregard for the condition of the local environment by these mussel farms with masses of old machinery and plastic 1,000 litre IBC's left lying anywhere and everywhere. Spain, Murcia, Los Alcazares - Mar Menor
The Mar Menor is a natural salt water lagoon found in the Community of Murcia in Spain. The Mar Menor or little sea has a maximum depth of seven metres and due to it's high salt levels gives added buoyancy for swimming.
The Mar Menor is created by the presence of the La Manga Strip which is a 22Km long sandbar running from La Manga in the south to the salt flats near San Pedro del Pinatar at the northern end. There is one small break in the La Manga Strip of around 200m and it is this break that allows some circulation of water with the Mediterranean. Throughout the year the waters of the Mar Menor are typically five degrees centigrade warmer than the Mediterranean. File 6692.

Spain, Murcia, Portman - The Calblanque
The small coastal town of Portman is located at the western end of the Calblanque. Portman itself is nowadays extremely quiet, though this was not always the case. Portman was once a major Roman port, though due to extensive mining in the area over the last 2,000 years the once huge bay has now largely filled with silt deposits from the mines. Most mines have now ceased to operate, but over the centuries the surrounding hills which bear the scars of this activity have yielded large quantities of silver, tin, lead, iron, quartz and other minerals.
This image was taken from the area previously occupied by the 'La Chapa' coastal battery gun emplacement which played an active role in the Spanish Civil War and was dismantled only as recently as 1994. File 6744.

Spain, Murcia, The Calblanque - Salinas del Rassall
The Calblanque is a coastal area in southern Spain which in 1987 was designated as a Regional Park for its outstanding natural beauty. The Calblanque is now one of the few coastal areas of in this part of southern Spain which has remained undeveloped. The coastline of the Calblanque is some 13Km long running from the east of Cabo de Palos along to the Bay of Portman.
Very close to where this image was shot are the salt flats of Salinas del Rassall which is still involved in the commercial production of salt. The highly saline waters of Salinas Del Rassall are home to a small number of very unusual species of fish and crustaceans which can tolerate such conditions. File 6942.

Spain, Murcia - Cabos de Palos
This group of rocks lie just offshore from the headland and dramatic cliffs of Cabo de Palos on the Costa Calida in southern Spain. Cabo de Palos is located on Cape Palos which lies at the southern end of the La Manga Strip. Cape Palos is one of a number of volcanic mounts which form a peninsula at this south eastern end of Spain.
Cape Palos has been witness to two historic navel battles in Spanish history. On June 19th 1815 the first Battle of Cape Palos took place between the U.S. Navy and Barbary Pirates sailing an Algerian brig. The pirates were defeated and the brig was escorted to Cartagena by the U.S. Navy. The second Battle of Cape Palos took place during the Spanish Civil War on the night of 5th-6th March 1938 and was the major naval battle of the war. Seven hundred and sixty five Nationalist sailors lost their lives in the battle. The Republican navy did not suffer any casualties or loss of life. File 2518.

Spain, Murcia - Cabo Tinoso
Located high up on the sea cliffs at Cabo Tinoso on the coast west of Cartagena are the gun batteries of La Bateria de Castillitos, La Bateria del Jorel and La Bateria El Atalayon. Bateria Castillitos houses two of the largest canons ever manufactured. The guns were made in the UK by Vickers, the largest of which has a barrel diameter of 381mm (15") is 17 metres in length (55.7") and was capable of firing a 900kg shell for a distance of 35 Km (21.75 miles). The guns were only ever fired once in anger (April 26th 1937) at the Nationalist Forces during the Spanish Civil War.
The fort seen in the foreground here is La Bateria del Jorel, which housed three Vickers 1923 152.4mm guns.
These military forts were in service until as recently as 1994 when they were finally de-commissioned. File 2592.

Spain, Murcia - Portman
Protected by a rocky outcrop inside The Bay of Portman you can find the remains of several old boats lying in a derelict boatyard. Nearby are moored the small fishing boats used by the fishermen of Portman for dropping their creels. File 2566.

Spain, Murcia - Portman (2)
Portman is a small coastal town found at the western end of the Calblanque. Historically speaking, Portman was strategically important to the Romans due to the vast bay that was found there during the Roman occupation. Two thousand years of extensive mining in the area has now largely filled the bay with vast silt deposits from the mines. The vast majority of mines have now closed which has brought economic hardship to the area, but over the centuries the surrounding hills which bear the scars of this activity have yielded large quantities of silver, tin, lead, iron, quartz and other minerals.
This image was taken from the area previously occupied by the 'La Chapa' coastal battery gun emplacement which played an active role in the Spanish Civil War and was dismantled only as recently as 1994. File 1389.

Spain, Murcia, Los Alcazares - Mar Menor
Until the early 1960's the Mar Menor (Little Sea) which is a salt water lagoon and the La Manga strip which is the sandbar that creates the Mar Menor were totally undeveloped. Then along came tourism and the area now after the last fifty years has undergone a great deal of development. In a roundabout way perhaps this old decaying boat links the present with the past to those days when things were much quieter and less commercialised along the coast of Spain. File 6714.
