The ruins of Duntulm Castle stand on a rocky headland

on the north coast of the Isle of Skye close to the hamlet of Duntulm. This area was subject to numerous feuds between the MacDonald and MacLeod clans, the castle was finally abandoned in approximately 1732. A local legend suggests that the castle was abandoned after the son of the chieftain who was in the care of a nursemaid fell from a window to the rocks below and died. The nursemaid it is said was set adrift on the sea in a small rowing boat as punishment. File 7366
