France, Alpes de Haute Provence - Gorge du Verdon
High up in the Gorge du Verdon is a boarded up house that was once occupied by the local road mender. La maison du cantonnier is a reminder of bygone days in France when the roads were maintained by the local road mender. At the turn of the 20th century prior to having a permanent residence many French road menders travelled the country with their steam rollers pulling their family and caravan behind them.
Located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region of south-eastern France the Gorge du Verdon is approximately 25 kilometres long and in parts is 700 metres deep. The gorge has been created by the Verdon River cutting it's way down through the limestone of the area. The views along the length of the gorge are certainly impressive. File 0781.

France, Alpes de Haute Provence - Valensole
This lone tree with it's mistletoe stands beside a farm track just outside the town of Valensole on the Plateau de Valensole in Provence. Valensole currently has an estimated population of just under 3,000 people, which has been steadily increasing since the 1960's. During the 18th century the population was significantly higher than that of today.
There are several possible explanations for the origins of the towns name, none of which can be proven and so this particular question remains a mystery. Valensole is built on a south-eastern facing slope and retains many features typical of the region. The streets are narrow with shutters and doors painted in typical Provence colours. File 0362.

France, Aquitane - Col de Marie Blanque
Warm moist air arriving on a westerly breeze from the Bay of Biscay rises up the Col de Marie-Blanque in the French Pyrenees, meets the colder air at this altitude and condenses to form a mist which slowly continues it's journey and drifts over the top of the pass.
Close to me on this particular morning was a French hunter, sitting patiently with his gun and making duck calls. Not that we spoke, but I'm fairly sure he wasn't too keen on sharing the hillside with me and my camera. File 6499.

Italy, Aosta Valley - Villeneuve
The River Dora flows around the outside of the comune of Villeneuve in the Aosta Valley before flowing past the Church of Saint Roch situated above it on the hillside. Higher up the hill stands the Château de Chatel Argent with its tower and remains of the Romanesque style church dedicated to Saint Colombe.
In 1802 Joseph Mallord William Turner the famous English Romantic landscape painter visited Villeneuve. Turner's piece The Bridge at Villeneuve from his Grenoble Sketchbook is currently displayed at the Tate Britain.
The peaks you see in the background running right to left are Bouque de Croux (1712 meters), Cou Plan (2200 m), Mont de Ane (2367 m) and Becca de Chamen (2961 m). File 2836.

Italy, Milan - Duomo
At the heart of Milan lies it's famous cathedral, the Duomo di Milano. Built over six centuries the Duomo di Milano is the fourth largest cathedral in the world and the largest in Italy. Started in 1386 the final completion date is given as the 6th January 1965 when the last gate was inaugurated.
This particular image taken from it's famous rooftop walkway shows the Duomo's famous flying buttresses, pinnacles and spires. File 5020.
