Whitehaven Candlestick-2288-Edit
The Candlestick chimney above Whitehaven in West Cumbria just after sunset. Supposedly based on a candlestick design from Lowther Castle. The Candlestick was the chimney for the boiler house at Wellington Pit which was the scene of Whitehaven's largest mining disaster in 1910. The chimney never formed part of the pits ventilation system, though in 1969 long after the pits closure a pipe was installed running from the pit up inside the chimney in order to safely vent any gas.
