Spain, Murcia - Cabos de Palos
This group of rocks lie just offshore from the headland and dramatic cliffs of Cabo de Palos on the Costa Calida in southern Spain. Cabo de Palos is located on Cape Palos which lies at the southern end of the La Manga Strip. Cape Palos is one of a number of volcanic mounts which form a peninsula at this south eastern end of Spain.
Cape Palos has been witness to two historic navel battles in Spanish history. On June 19th 1815 the first Battle of Cape Palos took place between the U.S. Navy and Barbary Pirates sailing an Algerian brig. The pirates were defeated and the brig was escorted to Cartagena by the U.S. Navy. The second Battle of Cape Palos took place during the Spanish Civil War on the night of 5th-6th March 1938 and was the major naval battle of the war. Seven hundred and sixty five Nationalist sailors lost their lives in the battle. The Republican navy did not suffer any casualties or loss of life. File 2518.
