Highland, Lochaber - Corrour
On the north eastern most edge of Rannoch Moor at Corrour lies Loch Ossian. The loch, hidden beyond the trees in the photograph runs roughly north eastward for approximately 5 km towards the Corrour Shooting Lodge.
Corrour Station is the highest and one of the remotest mainline railways station in the UK as there are no public roads between Corrour and the A86 some 16 Km away.
Sir John Stirling Maxwell in the late 19th century allowed the West Highland Railway Company to construct a railway line across his land on the condition that they built a station at Corrour. This allowed him to then develop his sporting estate. Victorian guests visiting the estate for fishing and shooting were met at Corrour station, transported to the head of Loch Ossian where the current Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is located and then ferried by steamer along the length of the loch to the Corrour Shooting Lodge.
